On Saturday 2nd December the nation will again be celebrating, supporting, and promoting thousands of UK small businesses. Small businesses are central to the heart of many of our communities; therefore South Staffordshire Council will be playing its part to support this grassroots campaign. We also need your help to make the day a huge success.
Feedback from businesses that have been part of previous Small Business Saturday campaigns told us the campaign led to increased community awareness, an increase in sales in the long term and new business opportunities. We therefore believe Small Business Saturday is a great opportunity for small businesses to reach new customers and open up new opportunities.
We’ll be aiming to raise awareness of as many small businesses as possible and encourage as many people as we can to shop local on the day and thereafter. We plan to achieve this by a) encouraging as many small businesses as we can to register onto this year’s campaign, and b) from November, carrying out a focused promotional campaign that raises the importance of small businesses and encourage residents to shop local. So whether a family business, local shop, online business, wholesaler business service or small manufacturer, we want to support as many small businesses on the day. We will also be promoting any local parish council celebrations that will be taking place on the day.
What is in it for local businesses?
Small Business Saturday UK 2017 is a free event. By registering to be part of the campaign, we can give local business increased exposure and potentially new customers through their door. We will also:
· Give them advice and ideas on how to maximise opportunities
· Increase awareness of their business through regular and routine mentions on social media platforms
· Run a promotional campaign that will encourage local people to shop local
· Provide a small quantity of cotton re-usable shopping bags that can be given out to their customers (subject to availability)
· The first 50 businesses that sign up, we will ‘boost’ their Facebook post to reach even more people
New for 2017
This year we want to encourage as many local people as we can to spend local. A great way of doing this is to offer an exclusive ‘Small Business Saturday Deal’ that can be used either on the day or within a specified time frame.
Our marketing campaign will encourage local people to download an A4 sheet of vouchers from our Small Business Saturday webpage – www.sstaffs.gov.uk/sbs. The vouchers will be available to download from Saturday 25th November 2017 until Monday 4th December 2017 and will be valid for as long as the business has stipulated. On average, the Council’s website gets approximately 20,000 hits a month. The combined total of our Twitter and Facebook accounts is 15,420 likes/followers, so we can guarantee people will get to know about your business and your exclusive deal during our Small Business Saturday campaign.
How local businesses can get involved
Taking part in this year’s campaign is easy. Businesses simply need to complete and return a registration form. This form can be found either online at www.sstaffs.gov.uk/sbs from Thursday 26th October or within an information pack that we can supply you with to distribute to your local businesses. The closing date for registrations is Friday 17th November 2017.
The sooner we receive completed forms back, the sooner we can prepare their social media feature that will go onto the Council’s Twitter and Facebook pages, as well as the Enjoy South Staffordshire Facebook page. We can also ensure vouchers are listed and ready to be downloaded. Any forms received after the 17th November 2017, we cannot guarantee the business will be promoted.
How your you can support your local businesses
As we are a very small team, we are looking for Small Business Saturday Ambassadors to help us make the day a success. The key role of Ambassadors will be to connect with local businesses in the community to encourage them to register and be part of the day. Please email me if you can help.
Last year Wombourne Parish Council held a number of celebrations and activities that brought people into the village on the day. Kinver businesses also came together and arrange children’s activities and entertainment on the day to celebrate the village’s small businesses. If you would like to host something similar in your parish, I am happy to offer you advice and guidance and can also promote any activities for you on social media.
I do hope that you can be part of this year’s campaign. Please email me if you have any questions. In the meantime I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to celebrate this year’s Small Business Saturday.
